There is small bank in Sapa, but it doesn't do anything useful like handle foreign-currency exchange. The nearest ATM is currently in Lao Cai. Most hotels accept US dollars, but expect a worse exchange rate than in Hanoi. Travellers cheques can also be changed at Royal Hotel and Victoria Hotel, but command a commission of around 5%.
